Our first Fix It Friday session happened on 27 Feb. I was a little apprehensive as I wasn't sure if people would come and learn how to repair clothes. But come they did! We had 5 participants in all and they came with jeans, chiffon blouses and even a dress with a broken zipper.
Our next session is happening on 20 March at 7pm. Sign up here.
Here are things that I have learnt so far. If you are thinking of starting your own repair session, you might find this handy.
As this was an evening session, we didn't want anyone to come in with a grumbling tummy. Food helps keep everyone happy too. We had curry puffs, tuna sandwiches and sushi, and green tea to wash everything down.
My very talented friend, Raye, helps me out with the sessions, and we decided that we could only manage 8 participants. Keeping it small allows you to spend time with each person - you don't want people feeling left out.
It's important to have a large workspace. Remember, everyone is bringing a garment so it's vital that there is enough space for them to be all laid out.
People don't repair in silence! Chat with your participants - have they done repair before? What techniques do they know? What's the story behind their garment? At the end of the day, it's not just about the repair, but building new friendships!
#5 Take Before and After Photos
Well, that's one thing that we forgot to do!! Having the photos allows you to see the progress of the repair! Here's a collage that one participant, Bernice, compiled. Bernice fixed her torn chiffon blouse with interfacing and reinforced it with machine embroidery. Thanks, Bernice!

It's good to know what your participants liked (or disliked). With the feedback, you can improve on the format of your sessions, and make it more enjoyable. I'm glad we had great feedback from our first session:
"I enjoyed the session very much and have picked up new tips on mending, not forgetting the new friends I made :) It was a 2 hours stress relief for me!" DL
"Had a warm and friendly experience and learned a few things as well." CWH
Do sign up for our next session - we'll be darning socks!
This is part of the Fix It Friday series.
