Sometimes as parents many of us will whip out the iPad in front of the kids for some peace and quiet, or when the kids moan "We're bored!". And most of the time, there's that tinge of guilt that will forever bug us with "Is this dangerous for my child's development?" To be honest, I have used the magical devices, but nowadays I try to use alternatives to break the boredom, such as refashioning and other upcycling crafts. In the process it helps my child learn the importance of DIY, and it makes for good family memories too.
If you would like to start on your creative journey with your children, why not take part in Voyage of Dreams: Only Believe (13 Oct 2013) which is co-organised by Public Libraries Singapore and The Playful Parents. It is a community celebration of hopes and dreams that children and families have. There will be lots of exciting activities for you to create special family memories, as well as get crafty with recycled cardboard. There's even going to be a cardboard ship for the kids to put their own cardboard animals on board! More registration details are here.
I'll be there volunteering so you could end up making one of these little babies!
Here's a how to:
Cut your egg crates - you will need two for each animal except for the tortoise.
On one of the egg crates, cut two ears. Use felt tip pens to mark the facial features and the feet. Use white glue to stick the head to the body.
For the tortoise, the egg crate will be its shell. Trace around the egg crate as shown above. Cut out the body and then stick it to the tortoise shell.
You're done!
