Washi Tape Shoes

Have you ever kept anything for ages because they were just too beautiful to give away? I kept my wedding shoes. They were Kenneth Cole white satin shoes with wooden soles. After a few years in the box, I wore them to work (only on sunny days!) with grey trousers. After a while, I decided to upcycle them with black lace. I wrote about it a few years back here

I have now decided to re-upcycle them again ..... with WASHI TAPE!  Washi tape is basically extremely pretty masking tape. I was introduced to it by creative mommy blogger at Xavvy-licious. There were so many ideas and I thought it would be good to try it out!

I went to Popular Bookstore and searched the stationery section for the Washi tape. There were so many colours to choose from, but I settled for a postal-type pattern from 3M's Scotch Expressions Washi Tape. It also had a waxy feel to it - I'm thinking waterproof? Don't you think it's pretty? I am glad I did choose this pattern as it meant my project didn't require neat taping!

I made sure my shoes were clean by wiping them with a moist towel. I did want to remove the black lace, but it just didn't work as I had used fabric glue to stick them down.

After cleaning the shoes, I just went crazy with the Washi tape. I then used a craft knife to clean everything up eg. to remove tape from areas where I didn't want them such as on the sides of the sole.

One issue I did have with the tape is that it peeled slightly from the satin. I think it would work better with traditional surfaces, but I solved it by brushing a generous amount of craft glue under and over the Washi tape. Perhaps using Modge Podge would work too! Anyway, I don't think I would wear them in wet weather.   These are definitely sunny day shoes and some colour would add a pop to my stride!
