Have you ever looked at the labels on your clothes to see where they are made from? Do you consider where the garment is made in before you make your purchase?
A lot of the clothes that are sold in Singapore are made overseas, and most likely in a country where the operating costs are far cheaper than the brand's country of origin. Lately, many people have come to question what goes on behind the fashion industry's supply chain.
Was the cotton farmer paid a fair wage?
Are the working conditions safe for the sewing machinist?
How many hours do they work?
The tipping point was when 1,133 people were killed and over 2,500 people were injured in the Rana Plaza factory complex collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh last April. Unfortunately, the victims are still no closer to compensation. About 600 miles away in Myanmar, working conditions in garment factories are no better.
"Who made your clothes?"
Now is the time to look at our clothes differently, to re-connect with the people who made them, show them that you care. Let's make sure that another Rana Plaza catastrophe does not ever happen again, and let's call for transparency across the fashion industry supply chain.

Join the Fashion Revolution Day, 24 April 2014
This year will be the first Fashion Revolution Day. It is a global movement started by Carry Somers, the founder of Pachacuti, the successful Fair Trade hat company. On the 24th April, the anniversary of the Rana Plaza collapse, all you have to do is wear your clothes inside out, take a photo and post it onto the social networks with the hastag #insideout ! Show your support!
Join Fashion Revolution Day in Singapore
A group of us are also organising this for Singapore, so stay tuned for updates on Facebook and Twitter! But if you want to join us, drop us a line.
PS: Being involved in this campaign means I will have less time for refashioning :-) so there will be fewer posts in that area!
Thanks so much for sharing this, had not heard of Fashion Revolution Day.. will I be brave enough to wear my clothes inside out to work?!
ReplyDeleteThanks for making everyone aware of Fashion Revolution Day. The post is worth reading as the thoughts you have put in are worth following.
