a) Scissors - You can't have too many. I have a pair for cutting fabric, one for thread and another for unpicking seams. You can also buy pinking shears (the ones that cut zig zag edges) to prevent fabric edges from fraying. Remember, don't use these for anything other than cutting fabric, and don't drop them on the floor. Once you do, it's bye-bye scissors!
Good quality scissors can be bought at Spotlight and Golden Dragon.
b) Needles for hand sewing and pins to ensure fabric stays in place.
c) Thread - Make sure you buy good quality thread. Poor quality thread will always snap in your machine.
d) Fabric chalk to make marks on your fabric. It washes out in the washing machine. You can buy washable fabric felt pens (more expensive) but test them out on scraps to make sure they really are washable.
e) Tape measure for doing body measurements. You can get good quality ones for less than $2 at the night market and China Town.
f) Ruler
g) Sewing machine - Mine's a Singer but any brand with the basic functions (straight and zig-zag stitches) is fine.
h) Iron - Okay, this doesn't "fit" inside my sewing box, but it's important enough! Use it to iron fabric and get the seams corrrect - very important! It's also useful for making bias tape.
Where I get my supplies:
a) Golden Dragon - #02-51, People's Park Centre - Less expensive than Spotlight. Sells fabric, zippers, buttons and patterns.
b) Spotlight, Plaza Singapura - Slightly on the expensive side but there are good quality tools. Aussie haberdashery / arts & crafts / household store.
c) Lye Nai Shiong, #02-1018A, Peoples Park Complex: It is REALLY tiny but they sell all your sewing stuff, especially zips, bias tape and interfacing, at lower prices.
