Another Refashion - Upcycle Your Cardigan!

13 comments
Do you have an old cardigan that you want to upcycle? Now's your chance because I have an easy DIY tutorial for you! You can do this on your sewing machine - it will take you less than 30 minutes - or by hand. If you're doing this by hand, I estimate it will take you a little under an hour.

This is what my old cardigan looked like. Short sleeves, love the metallic colour but somehow a bit out of shape.

I cut the bottom part, hemmed it with my sewing machine (you can use small blanket stitches if doing this by hand). You don't have to cut off the bottom part if you're comfortable with the shape. I then cut off the buttons (saving them for my next project!) and sewed up the opening.

For the next step I took the material I cut off from the bottom (you can use material from another top, contrasting material or perhaps lace), sewed long stitches by hand and ruched it. I then stitched it on by hand to the center of my new top, and voila! It looks new again.

Yay, I love it! Have you upcycled your cardigan lately? Do share your pics with me on facebook.

  1. That's so cute Agy! Your new top looks very smart! I haven't seen this refashion before - I'd love if you came and linked it to my clothes upcycling project page. It has a long term linky, so your project would stay there for more than just the week of a usual linky. We're getting close to 500 projects linked up now – some fantastic ideas.
    Do come and take a look!

  9. Cute upcycle idea - and great if you decided you needed a little extra space in front - one could add a panel before adding the ruffle! -Deanna {sewmccool}
