My Five Favourite Repairs

My Five Favourite Repairs
I haven't been able to blog for a whole week - we were very busy at the Fashion Revolution Day event last Friday, and I got so excited with the bigger than expected turnout that I couldn't sleep that night! Then it was the long weekend and we were pleasantly surprised to be invited on to 938Live on Wednesday to talk about the whole movement. So my mind has been abuzz as to how to improve the session and bring about more awareness. More of that in another blog post.

End of the Making Good Blog Train

But I thought it would be good to share my thoughts on the recent blog train  I hosted, Making Good. We had so many great repairs, and the most important thing was that we learnt something new.  One blogger mentioned that it was the repair train that got her to really get down to her mending - she had a whole pile of fixes to be done!

I want to share my five favourites. I was going to pick three but there were just so many good repairs that I was in a fix so I decided to choose five.

All of them are amazing so I encourage you to read about the blog train and all the posts, here!

#1 How to Repair Upholstery Holes

This came from Brandi of SuperGirlSavings. She made a great video on how to save your furniture.

#2 How to Repair Coats

Julia from Sum of Their Stories shared how she fixed a pleather jacket.  This was a great repair. We don't get to wear thick coats in Singapore but this will be useful with garments of any heavy material.

#3 How to Repair a Teddy Bear

I always thought that if you repaired a stuffed toy it would look like it had just gone through surgery. Not with Jean Stitch's tutorial - she makes an old teddy look brand new

#4 How to Fix a Bag Strap

Stella from Purfylle showed us how to mend a bag strap with crochet

#5 How to Repair Toys

It's always good to teach your children to make do with the toys that you have, and broken ones too! Judith of Juicy Green Mom came up with a great way of salvaging her child's broken toy.

What is Repair? Why Bother?

Some see repair as a way of reconnecting with our possessions as we extend their lives. Others see it as a form of creative potential and an avenue to express their craft.  The rewards for mending varies from feeling immense satisfaction to prolonging the life of the product. Hop over to the “Making Good” blog train and see what we have repaired and reconnected with. Have you mended anything today?

Do you love to listen to music? I have a drawer full of CDs and ......

cassette tapes...

(no I wasn't going to mention vinyl, just in case you were all wondering!) .... yes, tapes.

I remember the time when we had to fiddle with the play, stop, rewind and fast forward buttons just to get to the right song; it took forever to get there.

Oh, and the constant flipping of the cassettes from side A to side B... those were the days. I think the most annoying part came when the tape broke and your favourite songs couldn't be played anymore.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised by Maegan from MaeandK.com. She still plays her tapes and she blogged about her tape repair!  She is featured in this week's Fix It Friday features. Also, featured is Vanessa's shoe repair - she has a neat trick up her sleeve!

If you would like to find great repair tips in the Making Good blog train visit here. We still have one more week of great fixes to go!

Enjoyed these repairs? There are a lot more over at the Fix It Friday Series!

This week passed by so quickly that I don't even know where it went! But what did happen was my sewing machine decided to act up and refuse to budge. I wasn't very happy about it especially when I have a few projects in mind. Hopefully with some troubleshooting, all will be well.

Have you been visiting the posts in the Making Good blog train? We had some lovely and amazing repairs but the two that stood out were Brandi's upholstery repair using a technique that her father had taught her as a teenager (I love it when skills are passed down), and Christine's beautiful visible mending weave to fix the holes on her skorts (a short skirt!).

How Do I Fix the Hole in Upholstery?

Check out Brandi's tutorial at her blog and don't forget to watch the video!

Good morning everyone! Have you been following the Making Good blog train? We are into our first week, and I thought I would show you my two favourite repairs of the week. This week we saw a few shoe repairs, patches and even jewelry repair. You can find out more in this link.

My two fave repairs this week are.......

How To Fix The Inner Sole of a Shoe!

Pop over to find out how she did it because she uses a secret material....shhhh! In the olden days, my pa said that they would just stuff cardboard or line their shoes with newspaper, but we don't have to do that anymore. Yaney's shoes look a lot more comfortable now.

How to Fix a Bag Strap!

I like this fix from Stella of Purfylle because she retained the design of the bag, and also because she used crochet as well. I think most people (including me) would have just sewn on a fabric strap, but her fix is so much better. Time to pick up those crochet hooks.

Happy fixing everyone!

Making Good - Fixing My Jug With Polymorph

This is the first post in the "Making Good" repair blog train.

Taking on the Challenge!

I usually repair a lot of textile related possessions and have featured several on my Fix It Friday series. I love how you can create a piece of art when you mend a garment. However, when it comes to the techie fixes, or anything that uses anything from the tool box, I usually leave them to my husband. But not today, I'm trying something different. I have decided to tackle a non-textile related fix.

My Jug

So this is my Tupperware water jug that has been in my family since I was in secondary school, and so this jug is now "x" years old - you can figure out the "x"! Just last month the knob at the top of the jug snapped off (and rather strangely) symmetrically. The jug is still functional but because of the snapped knob, we are having difficulty taking the lid off.

I decided to fix it because, well, it is still working!

Polymorph, It's Just Like Plasticine

I was introduced to polymorph last month. They are tiny white beads that melt in hot water and can be moulded into anything you want, just like plasticine! The plus side is they can be REMOULDED - just pop it back into the hot water and work it with your hands - it was really easy. According to the manufacturer it is non-toxic and biodegradable polyester.   Here's a video of what I did, and now my jug looks like new, well almost.  is fully functional.

Safety: Hot water is needed when using polymorph so becareful.

Don't Like It? Remould It!

I had to pop it back into the hot water as it didn't turn out the way I wanted the first time round.

Would You Fix With Polymorph?
I found a few great tutorials on how to use polymorph in repair around the house.
