Greeny Crafter - Creating my way to Success

Creating my way to Success

I just finished showcasing my refashioned projects at the Singapore Maker Meet at Home-Fix last Friday.  It was very exciting because I was among many great makers - cardboard sculptures, jewelry, 3-D printers and even a hover plane! Will post some pictures soon See link. This week's Greeny Crafter, Jill, comes from Australia. I first came across her when she hosted her global blog hop, Creating Success Around the World.  She now hosts the popular A Round Intuit blog linky every Monday. Thanks, Jill for agreeing to be interviewed.

Upcycling My Umbrella to a Blinky Bike Bag

When it comes to cycling, we always think of safety first. We have our helmets and our bike reflector vest, but somehow, my hubby always forgets the vest but remembers the helmet. That really doesn't make sense!  So, when my umbrella broke I decided to make a bike bag with reflectors on it. The bag would be a permanent fixture on the bike. Then I thought why not sew in some blinky LED lights.

I got really excited but after a while, I lost interest in the project. The umbrella sat in my store room for a while until last week when one of the co-founders, Veera, from Sustainable Living Lab suggested I venture into wearable technology.  My reactions were "I don't know programming code!" and "I failed physics!", but then I just decided to dive straight into it. What's more, I had the umbrella to bike bag to work on, right?

Greeny Crafter - Serger Pepper

Hello! I hope everyone had a lovely weekend. I spent Sunday twiddling with some LED lights, and it drove me nuts.  This week our Greeny Crafter is a lovely lady, Irene, from Italy. I got to know her through Google+ when I was looking for patterns. As some of you know, I'm terrible at patterns, but I'm hoping Irene will be able to help me out!

Remake it - Clothes

Last week I looked at Junky Styling - Wardrobe Surgery. What I didn't mention in that post was that when I borrowed Junky Styling from the library, I also took out Remake it - Clothes. To be honest, I wasn't as attracted as much to Remake it - Clothes as I was to the former. But, I had to take the phrase "never judge a book by it's cover" literally.  In fact, it is rather unfair for me to compare both of the books as Remake has over 500 tricks, tips and inspirational designs inside, and is targeted at an audience who wants to refashion as a hobby.

It's Greeny Crafters again. This week, we have the lovely Pam of Threading My Way. If you are in need for some sewing inspiration, you will definitely need to pop over and pay her a visit. Her site is very resourceful and has crowdsourced many tutorials and tips. I interviewed her to find out her favourite refashions and share her refashioning tips.

Fashion Revolution Day - Who Made Your Clothes?

Have you ever looked at the labels on your clothes to see where they are made from? Do you consider where the garment is made in before you make your purchase?

A lot of the clothes that are sold in Singapore are made overseas, and most likely in a country where the operating costs are far cheaper than the brand's country of origin. Lately, many people have come to question what goes on behind the fashion industry's supply chain.

Was the cotton farmer paid a fair wage?
Are the working conditions safe for the sewing machinist?
How many hours do they work?

Junky Styling : Wardrobe Surgery

Before the terms "refashioning" and "upcycling" were coined, there was "Junky Styling".  Back in the nineties, two creative teenagers, Kerry Seager and Annika Sanders wanted clothes that would make them look unique, but as they didn't have any money, they started remaking old clothes into new styles. Their line of upcycled clothes was embraced by the high street and celebrities, including Livia Firth, who wore a dress made by the Junky Styling team from Colin Firth's moth-eaten suits.

After an extremely long hiatus, the Greeny Crafters series is restarting, and will feature every Monday. If you upcycle, do drop me an email at greenissuesg (at) gmail (dot) com!

Who are we featuring this week? It is Jen of GreenieGenie. You might have seen her plying her upcycled accessories at MAAD or at last year's Handmade Movement, but I first met Jen through a green meetup two years ago. I discovered she made jewelry pieces from waste, and even plants! She's also offering readers a special discount too! Read on to find out more.
